When Doctors Were Not Sure If She Would Survive, a Hero’s Compassion Gave Her a Second Chance

By Jack Day

In 2013 Melissa Dohme was stabbed over 30 times by her ex boyfriend and left to die in the street. It was only when passer by’s frightened her attacker that the assault stopped. When paramedics responded she was barely breathing and had lost severe amounts of blood. She spent over three weeks in St. Petersburg’s Bayfront Medical Center in Florida battling for her life. The doctors were not sure if she would make it.

To everyone’s surprise Melissa made a miraculous recovery and even walked out of the hospital without so much as a cane. After she traveled for a while and enrolled in nursing school because of the inspiring staff who cared for her, Melissa still had to meet the paramedics who initially saved her.

One of those men was Cameron Hill. While speaking at a church in Clearwater, Melissa was shocked to see that both paramedics were in attendance. After an initial meeting it became very obvious to Melissa and Cameron that something more might exist between them. I will let the video tell you the ending to this horrible tragedy turned fairy tale.

When terrible things happen, like nearly being stabbed to death, there is not always a happy ending like this one. However, when there is a light at the end of the tunnel it speaks to our sense of wonder and the mysteries of life. Do you have any stories of tragedy turned triumph?
