The other day, my friend Jonah got lucky as hell and won $1000 on a scratch off ticket! I was so happy for him because I know he has a lot of bills to pay and a cool G cash prize would really be a big help. However, instead of using the money to pay off some of his debts and buy some important stuff that he really needed, Jonah bought a new phone for $800.

I don’t quite understand some people. They keep on pursuing happiness, yet they also keep on doing things that drive it away. They are always in search for love, but once they find it, they take it for granted. They’re so busy looking for short term happiness, that they fail to see the opportunities that are right in front of them. They want to be wealthy, but they’re not willing to start small and do all the hard work.

Some people are just impossible; they’re always looking for the easy way out, always have something to complain about, and always wish for something great to happen to them without even exerting any effort to get closer to achieving their dreams.

They say if your habits are not helping you, then they are hurting you. Here are some of the habits that you should drop right now in order to be happier.

Stop Looking for Perfection

Striving for perfection is the easiest way to make yourself unhappy simply because it doesn’t exist. Sorry to disappoint you, my friend, but perfection is just an illusion, a myth. No matter how hard you try, you won’t be able to please everyone. At some point, you will offend people, they will criticize you no matter what you do and they will hate you if they want to. Unfortunately, there’s nothing that you can do about it because that’s just how things are.

In love, for instance, some people are having a hard time finding happiness because they are always busy looking for other options instead of investing their effort in making their relationship work. They are chasing perfection by looking for a perfect partner and a flawless relationship. The thing is, that idea is just pure fantasy, because in reality there will be times that your partner will annoy you, disappoint you, and drive you crazy, and that’s okay.

According to writer Sean Abrams, getting to know someone’s faults and insecurities is the way to build a bond that lasts forever. So, give your relationship a chance to evolve. Invest in it rather than running away from it every time you see something that you don’t like. That’s what it means to really love someone – to deal with her irritating quirks, dumb jokes and even stupidities.

Stop Wasting Opportunities

A friend of mine told me that he is interested in opening his own food cart business so I invited him to an event wherein he could meet potential clients and prospective partners. However, all those opportunities just got wasted because he was too shy to talk to them and ask questions. In my mind, we might as well have stayed home.

This is the problem with most people. They are already presented with wonderful opportunities but end up wasting them because of fear, laziness and slackness. To get things done, you should avoid wasting your time and learn to grab the right opportunities.

Stop Obsessing About Unimportant Things

Don’t give irrelevant people and unimportant situations the power to ruin your mood and destroy your potentially perfect day. When you allow little things to bother you, you will just end up wasting your energy being angry and unproductive.

So, try to stop complaining and make a conscious effort to let little things go. Divert your attention into something else and choose to focus on your inner peace.

Writer Mary Grace Taylor suggests doing these 7 things that could drive away your poor mood and calm your nervous system down.

Stop Living a Lie

Find your own purpose and stop living someone else’s dream. Create more meaning in your life by listening to your heart, following your passions and doing something that you love.

In the piece “One Video That Can Truly Change the World,” writer Joe Martino shows how dull, miserable, and lifeless this planet can be for people who don’t find the courage to pursue their happiness and make a difference.

Guys, time is your most valuable asset so stop spending it mindlessly by being stuck in a job you hate, by staying in a toxic relationship that doesn’t bring out the best in you and by letting other people decide for you. You only have one life to live so live it to the fullest by doing things that you truly enjoy.
